If It Hurts, Don’t Do It

Sometimes the best teacher is pain.  Most kids, once they’ve touched fire/ hot objects and found out “hey, that hurts,” don’t touch it again.  They’ve learned their lesson.
So why do adult humans insist on continuing to do things known to cause pain?  Why do people insist on remaining friends with or in romantic entanglements with those that cause pain?  Why continue eating something you know causes you physical or mental pain?
Break the cycle!  You can’t change someone, you can’t change how things happen.  But you can control the extent to which they’re ALLOWED to cause you pain.  If it hurts, don’t do it.  If it hurts still, you’re obviously still doing it, stop that.  If someone is continuously causing you grief, either get them out of your life or find a way to not allow them to cause you pain.  No one willingly goes on crutches, no one willingly breaks their foot so they get to wear a cast. So why do you willingly keep causing yourself pain?
